NASA announced a suite of awards and mission updates on Saturday to expand the agency’s Moon Base exploration, science, and infrastructure capabilities. The investments will advance commercial robotic deliveries, a nuclear-powered rover named PROMISE, launch and orbital transfer services, and surface infrastructure as the agency works with American industry to establish a sustained presence on […]
Verified Details and Technical Data of the News
The agency shared the news at NASA's MAX POWER aerospace expo and air show at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
"We're building the Moon Base mission after mission," said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. "Today's announcements expand on nearly every part of this campaign, using the playbook that brought NASA to its greatest era: fly often, learn, apply those lessons, and get better and more capable at every mission. When our astronauts return to the Moon, the first elements of the Lunar Base will already be waiting for them on the surface."
“In the eight months since launch, we have made incredible progress in achieving the nearly impossible: establishing a permanent outpost on the lunar surface,” said Carlos García-Galán, director of the Lunar Base Program. "We have combined multiple efforts into a streamlined program, transforming our human exploration architecture into an iterative and sustained campaign for the development and application of Lunar Base technology. Most importantly, we have taken action by awarding new contracts and forming new partnerships to accelerate development."
NASA has selected eight companies for the next phase of its CLPS (Commercial Lunar Load Services) initiative to strengthen the cargo drop network needed to support the Lunar Base. Companies have the right to compete for future lunar surface delivery missions under the new CLPS 2 contract:
