OLED screens, which stand out in the television market with their superior black balance and contrast performance, face a risk of physical wear that is very different from the long-rumored concern of pixel burn-in. Extensive durability tests conducted by hardware review platform RTINGS documented edge areas deterioration in 14 of 16 television models carrying WOLED panels produced by LG Display. This picture, which affects Sony televisions that use the same panel infrastructure as well as LG models, points to a technical malfunction completely independent of traditional static image traces.

Edge Rot in WOLED Panels and Possible Causes

The deformation, which the technical review team introduced to the literature with the definition of "edge rot", manifests itself as dead pixels or grouped black dots appearing on lines close to the screen frame. These pixel losses spread across the screen borders are directly associated with the production quality rather than the usage habits of the panel. The engineers who conducted the investigation point out that the protective insulation layers that isolate the panel from external environmental conditions and especially moisture leakage may have lost their function over time. It is thought that microscopic weaknesses in the insulation barriers directly destroy the pixel structure.

Looking at the inspection data, it can be seen that the most severe damage is concentrated in the old generation WBC type panels. This edge distortion was detected in 9 of the 10 WBC panel televisions included in the testing process. It has been recorded that the damage reached an advanced level in 5 of these panels, and in 3 models it became visible to the user's eye.

User Experience and Sectoral Reflections

The emerging findings bring into question the life expectancy of consumers who invest in premium televisions. Pixel losses appearing along the screen frame may lead to costly parts replacement in devices whose panel warranty has expired. On the manufacturer side, brands such as LG Display and Sony are expected to reconsider their protective coating technologies and moisture insulation standards. Consumers are advised to keep ambient humidity under control in order to protect long-term panel health.
