Battery promising 2,000 km range for electric cars

CATL is working on lithium-air batteries that can offer a range of 2,000 km on a single charge. The new technology promises much higher energy density than existing batteries.

New generation battery studies aiming to eliminate range limits in the electric vehicle ecosystem are gaining momentum. Lithium-air technology, which promises a driving distance of up to 2,000 kilometers on a single charge, has a wide impact in the automotive industry by redefining the principle of storing and releasing energy.

3.505 Wh/kg Theoretical Capacity with Atmospheric Oxygen

Current lithium-ion batteries have to carry all the chemicals required for the reaction in the cell body. The developed lithium-air architecture draws the oxygen it needs directly from the ambient air. During the discharge phase, metallic lithium combines with oxygen in the air to form lithium peroxide (Li₂O₂) and generate electricity. When charging the battery, the process works in reverse; Lithium peroxide decomposes, releasing oxygen and the lithium becomes reusable. Not carrying reactive oxygen in the body gives the system a theoretical energy density of approximately 3,505 Wh/kg. Considering that today's lithium-ion cells offer 200-300 Wh/kg and advanced solid-state alternatives offer 350-500 Wh/kg, a huge storage advantage stands out despite the losses outside the laboratory.

Carbon Dioxide Barrier and Sectoral Future

Despite the high potential it offers, there are difficult obstacles to overcome in the transition of the technology to mass production. One of the main challenges encountered is air management. While water vapor in the ambient air reacts directly with metallic lithium, carbon dioxide disrupts the chemical cycle by causing the formation of lithium carbonate (Li₂CO₃). The advances engineers will make in air filtration and membrane technologies will directly determine the life and safety of the battery. If these problems are overcome, electric vehicle drivers can completely leave behind the need for charging breaks during intercity trips, and electric mobility can replace traditional motor vehicles in the global market much faster.
