It is not easy to extract iron from its ore. But the people of the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe, the capital of a kingdom that flourished in southern Africa between 1000 and 1700 AD, were masters.
In areas near the stone ruins of the city, piles of iron smelting furnaces survive today as piles of rubble. At the village of Mashava, 40 kilometers northwest, the fragments bear the fingerprints of those who smoothed the clay interiors of the structures long ago.
Some of the ovens were almost as wide as an adult's arm span; its walls were thick and strong enough to retain heat in excess of 2,100° Fahrenheit required to melt iron. Unlike other furnaces that required workers to force air in with a blower, these were designed to draw air in and then force it out through a chimney; It did not require human labor. This would make it significantly easier to produce iron that was turned into hoes, axes, and arrowheads.
“The number and size of these furnaces, combined with the use of natural draft technology, indicate intensive and technologically advanced iron production,” says archaeometallurgist Ezekiel Mtetwa of the Chicago Museum of Natural History, who has long studied the furnaces.
