China has commissioned the world's largest liquid air energy storage facility with a storage capacity of 60 MW/600 MWh. The system can provide electricity for 10 hours by storing excess energy.
It can provide electricity for 10 hours with liquid air technology.
The facility, which has a nominal power output of 60 MW and an energy storage capacity of 600 MWh, is designed to provide uninterrupted electricity for 10 hours at full capacity. According to CGDG's statement, the system will be able to store approximately 600 MWh of excess renewable energy every day. Annual electricity production is expected to reach approximately 180 GWh. This amount corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 30 thousand households.
The system uses atmospheric air instead of lithium-ion batteries to store energy. The system, which comes into play when electricity demand is low and there is excess production from solar or wind power plants, uses electricity to liquefy the air.
When electricity is needed, the stored liquid air is re-pressurized, heated and converted into gas. The expanding gas turns the turbines, allowing the generators to produce electricity. The cold energy released during evaporation is also recovered and stored for use in subsequent charging cycles. Thus, the system benefits from both the heat released during compression and the temperature differences in the liquefaction and gasification processes.
All main equipment made in China
One of the striking features of the project was the importance it gave to the use of domestic technology. Key components of the system, including large centrifugal compressors, liquid expanders, cryogenic heat exchangers and integrated control systems, were developed in China. CGDG announced that all of the main equipment is domestic production and a 100 percent domestic production rate has been achieved in the project.
