Rear axle broke in Malaysia: Chery recalls 53 thousand vehicles in China

Chery announced a recall of 53,882 vehicles in China, covering the Omoda series and Tiggo 5x models. Welding defects on the rear axle can lead to loss of wheel control in some conditions.

According to the statement, due to problems in the production process, the welding connection between the longitudinal control arm and the bushing housing on the rear axle of some vehicles may not have sufficient strength. In extreme cases, breaking this connection can cause loss of wheel control and increase the risk of an accident.

Chery will check the production date codes on the rear axles of the vehicles covered by the recall free of charge. Rear axles determined to belong to the defective production group will be replaced free of charge.

In its statement on October 11, the company stated that sufficient strength may not have been provided in some welding areas of the rear axle swing arm of the vehicles in the relevant production group. It was announced that a special risk investigation was launched for Omoda 5s in China and other relevant markets, which belong to the same production group.

This wasn't the first recall for the Omoda 5 in Malaysia due to a rear axle problem. Following a similar incident in April 2024, 600 vehicles were recalled for examination, and in the investigation at that time, the problem was attributed to faulty calibration of the rear axle welding equipment.
